Life is full of odds. People always have ideas on what is possible and what is not. They know what is easy and what is difficult to achieve. Some situations are considered too difficultfor ordinary humans to manage. Others are regarded as simple for everyone to handle.
The natural tendency is for people to focus on what they believe may be easy for them to perform. At times, however, people may willingly face difficult situations or simply feel compelled to do so. Conditions may arise and it becomes necessary to confront challenges even when society sees low or no chances of success. Some people believe in possibilities and would not hesitate to step forward to address the problems which others may consider insurmountable. This requires that a person should abandon their comfort zone and jump into a deprived space that gives little hope of success.
Individuals and communities sometimes grapple with such issues as discrimination, oppression and deprivation. Some of these troubles are so entrenched that people might even take them as an acceptable way of life. They may ordinarily seem insurmountable. Oppressive habits manifest when leaders become malicious in exercising their power against certain individuals or groups. People sometimes experience prejudicial treatment and are denied their rights.
When these things happen, people respond differently. Some become silent out of fear. Others feel helpless and become indifferent, believing they have nothing to do. Others surrender and cooperate with the perpetrators to exacerbate the crisis. Yet, others cannot be at peace until the situation improves. This often calls for radical interventions bordering on self-sacrifice, which demands that someone moves out of their comfort zone toconfront the problem.
While most people choose self-preservation, few others understand that navigating difficult situations brings feelings of self-satisfaction. It is rewarding to stand up when everyone is pressured to sit down. Whenever there is a problem to solve, someone needs to solve it regardless of the challenges involved. It might appear dangerous to confront the odds but the efforts of the people who confront odds never go unrewarded.
Confronting unfavourable situations requires determination and builds resilience for an individual to handle any future difficulties. It also helps in discovering the hidden strengths that a person may not have known they possessed. As a result, oneattains a better version of self by activating the dormant traitswithin. The person ultimately becomes better physically, socially, and psychologically. Furthermore, it strengthens belief in one's own abilities. Scholars assert that, as individuals succeed in new or hard situations, their self-confidence grows, leading to higher self-esteem and a belief that they can handle whatever life throws at them.
In the same vein, the struggle helps one to lead a more authentic life, which is a key component to a person’s long-term wellbeing. Embracing discomfort keeps life exciting and prevents stagnation. It enables the person to feel truly alive. It brings a sense of fulfilment as one discovers that he was alwayscapable of accomplishing much more than previously imagined.Standing firm in the face of potential adversity turns the struggle into personal power; it allows one to attain a more refined character.
Beyond the individual, confronting the odds and defying limitations has a ripple effect. It creates legacy and encourages other people to face their own struggles with confidence. Other community members will pick lessons from someone’s struggles and use them for their future endeavours. One’s apparent self-sacrifice, therefore, may become a catalyst for an eventual revolution in an entire community.
